Professor Conchúr Ó Brádaigh is Vice President and Head of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sheffield. Conchúr was previously the Chair of Engineering Materials and Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, and Director of the SFI-funded Marine Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) research centre at University College Cork, Ireland. He was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Galway from 1990 to 2014. Conchúr is an elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Material, Minerals and Mining and of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He was President of SAMPE Europe from 2024 to 2026 and a member of SAMPE’s Global Board. He has been Vice-Chair of the SAMPE UK & Ireland committee since 2016.
Conchúr has worked in advanced composite materials research since 1986, including a decade running a spinout aerospace composites manufacturing company in Galway, Ireland. He has BE and MEngSc degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Galway, Ireland, and earned a PhD in composite materials from the University of Delaware, USA, in 1990. His research interests include manufacturing, testing, modelling and sustainability of thermoplastic composite materials for renewable energy, aerospace and automotive applications. He is a leading international composites expert with 245 publications (inc. 110 in refereed journals) and >£23M funding as PI.
