Before joining the University of Sheffield in 2023, Conchúr was Head of the School of Engineering at University of Edinburgh, a position he took up in 2018 after joining in 2015 as Chair of Materials Engineering. He was previously Professor of Energy Engineering at University College Cork, Ireland, where he was also Director of the SFI Marine Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) Research Centre from 2014 to 2015. He lectured at the University of Galway from 1990 to 2014, during which time he was also a Co-Founder and Joint Managing Director of two Irish composite materials design, testing and manufacturing companies.

He received a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 from the University of Galway, Ireland, followed by a Masters Degree in 1987. This was followed by a PhD in composite materials from the University of Delaware, USA in 1991

Conchúr is an elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Material, Minerals and Mining and of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

He has been a SAMPE member since 1988 and joined the SAMPE UK & Ireland Committee in 2016, currently serving as Vice-Chair.  He is also Vice-President of SAMPE Europe and will become President in July 2024.
